Working in Oakman

Clearing, Mulching & Dirt Work in Oakman

Highway 18 ends in Oakman. It runs through our home town of Berry first, then east over the county line until it meets Highway 69 here, which makes this some of the closest Walker County ground to us. The town is small, 771 people at the 2020 census, and its town limit is drawn as a circle. Past that circle it is cutover timber, hunting tracts, family land and old home places.

We are Down South Land Solutions, a land clearing, forestry mulching and excavating outfit. Around Oakman that mostly means opening ground back up: lanes and trails cut through thick woods, a fence line you can drive again, a home site cleared and graded, a drive that sheds water. We do it with a Cat dozer, tracked mulching loaders and an excavator. Estimates are free. Call or text (205) 535-6376.

A railroad and coal town first

The first post office here opened in 1860 under the name York. The place was later called Day's Gap, after a local landowner, and took its present name in 1894. The likelier account says it honors W. G. Oakman of the Sloss-Sheffield Iron and Steel Company. A railroad arrived in 1884, a coal mine opened nearby, and the town became a shipping point. So this land has been worked for a long time. Steep hollows and ridge lines sit beside old mine ground in places.

Hunting land and cutover

A lot of the country around Oakman is timber that was cut and left to come back on its own. In a few seasons it is a wall of pine saplings, sweetgum and briars. The mulcher turns that into shooting lanes, trails and food plots without pulling a stump, and cleanup after logging deals with the tops and slash a crew leaves behind. Tell us where the stands are, or better, ride it with us. Twenty minutes on a four-wheeler saves cutting a lane in the wrong place.

Slopes get mulched, not scraped

Bare hillsides in Walker County wash. That is why we mulch the slopes and save the dozer for the spots that have to be bare: the house site, the shop pad, the drive. Mulching leaves the root ball in the ground and a layer of chips on top, so the dirt stays where it is. If the stumps have to come out, that is a clearing job, and we do that too. The Walker County page has more on the county.

Questions

Oakman Questions

More answers on our FAQ page and in the guides.

Do you clear land in Oakman, AL?

Yes. Oakman is close to home for us, on the same state highway as our base in Berry. We do forestry mulching, land clearing, stump and dirt work, driveways, pads and demolition here with our own tracked machines. Call or text with where the property is and what is growing on it.

Can you cut shooting lanes and food plots on hunting land near Oakman?

Yes. Lanes and trails are mulched to the width you want, and food plots are cleared and left ready to work. If you plan to disc the plot, say so, because stumps in the way of a disc have to come out and that changes the job. It is easier done well ahead of the season. Calls in September still get done, it is just the harder way round.

What is the cheapest way to clean up cutover timber around Oakman?

Mulching, in most cases. One machine grinds the saplings, tops and briars where they stand, and nothing has to be piled, burned or hauled. It costs more where the stems are near the top of the mulcher's range, roughly six to eight inches, or where the ground is steep. Anything bigger is clearing work. We price it after a look, at no charge.

How it works

How a Job Runs

Tell Us What You Have

Call, text or send the form. County, rough acreage, what is growing on it and how a truck and trailer gets in.

We Look at the Ground

Close by, we come and look. Farther off, we can go over it with you on satellite first, then see it on the ground before the work starts.

A Number to Plan Around

Estimates are free and priced off the property. Small jobs carry a minimum, and you hear the figure before you commit.

The Machines Go to Work

We settle what comes out and what stays. Mark the trees you want kept, or walk it with us and point them out.

Finished, Not Just Knocked Down

Holes filled, ground pulled back to grade, and the fall set so water leaves the site instead of standing on it.
