Retaining Walls, Start to Finish
A bank that is moving tells you. Red clay slumps onto the drive after every hard rain. The cut behind the shop sheds a little more each winter. The back yard falls away so steeply that half of it cannot be mowed, let alone used. Hill country lots do this, and so do steep lake lots, where the only flat ground is the ground somebody made. A wall holds the cut and gives you level ground above it or below it. Built right, it does that for a long time. Built wrong, it leans.
The block is the part people look at. What decides whether the wall is still standing after years of wet winters is everything you cannot see: a trench dug to firm ground, a packed stone footing, a first course set dead level, clean gravel backfill behind the face, and somewhere for water to get out. Walls fail because water builds up behind them and pushes. Drainage is not an upgrade on a retaining wall. It is the wall. A wall without drainage is a wall with a deadline.

Block, boulder, or a slope instead
Segmental block is the usual answer. It is clean, it stacks, and it handles a curve around a drive or a patio. Boulder walls suit a rural property and a taller bank, and they look like they belong there instead of like they were shipped in. And sometimes the honest answer is that you do not need a wall at all. If there is room, the bank can be cut back with the dozer to a slope that holds itself and left ready for seed, for a fraction of the money. If that is the case on your job, we will say so. Why walls lean, bulge and fall
Nearly always water, and usually one of four mistakes. The wall was set on topsoil or loose fill instead of a packed base on firm ground. It was backfilled with the same clay that came out of the cut, which holds water like a bowl. Nobody gave the water behind it a way out. Or the yard above drains straight at the wall, so every storm loads it again. A roof downspout dumping behind a wall will do it by itself. Fixing where the water goes above the wall is half of building one, and it is the same work as our yard drainage and grading.
Height changes the job
Low and mid-height walls are straightforward. Past a certain height, or with a driveway, a building or a steep slope sitting above it, a wall stops being a landscaping job and becomes an engineered structure, with reinforcement layers running back into the hillside and, in some places, a stamped design and a permit. Where that line falls depends on the block maker's own guidance, the soil, and the local building office, so inside a city limit ask the building department before you build. We look at the bank and tell you which side of the line it falls on before you have spent anything.
Lake lots, drives and cut pads
Three places a wall earns its keep out here. A steep lake lot where the house site, the parking and the path down all had to be cut out of a hillside. A driveway benched into a bank that keeps sliding back onto it. And the high side of a cut pad for a house or a shop, where a wall buys back the yard a long slope would eat. How tall can a retaining wall be before it needs an engineer?
There is no single number that fits every bank, so we will not print one. It depends on the block maker's guidance, the soil, what sits above the wall, and what your city or county building office requires. A driveway or a building near the top changes it. We look at the bank and tell you early if it needs a designed wall, before you have spent anything.
Do retaining walls need drainage behind them?
Yes, every one. Water that soaks into the bank has to get out, or it builds pressure behind the face and pushes. That means clean gravel backfill behind the wall and a path for water to leave, plus grading above so surface water is not aimed at it. A wall without drainage is a wall with a deadline.
Can a leaning retaining wall be fixed or does it have to be rebuilt?
It depends why it is moving. If the wall itself is sound and the trouble is water building up behind it, that can often be fixed by opening it up, adding gravel and an outlet, and regrading above. If the base was never right, rebuilding usually costs less than chasing it. Send a photo and we will tell you which it looks like.
Is a boulder wall or a block wall better for a steep bank?
Both hold a bank when the base and the drainage are right. Segmental block is neat, stacks to a set pattern and follows a curve, so it suits yards, patios and drives close to the house. Boulders suit rural ground and taller banks, and they look like part of the hillside. Access matters too, since boulders need room for the machine that places them.
What does a retaining wall cost in west Alabama?
Length and height first, then everything the wall needs behind it. More height means more digging, more base stone and more gravel backfill. Block and boulder price differently.
