Winston County is rough country. It sits in the Appalachian foothills on the Cumberland Plateau, and the ground runs from low rolling hills in pine to gorges, rock bluffs and hardwood hollows. The William B. Bankhead National Forest covers much of the county, and Lewis Smith Lake fills the valleys of the Sipsey Fork on the southeast side. Private land is what lies between and around those two, and most of it slopes one way or another.

Smith Lake lots
Lake lots around Arley and Houston tend to be steep and wooded, and most need two things before a house can go on them: clearing and a road in. We mulch the slope so the bank stays covered, open the view, and clear to bare ground only where the house and drive will sit. Alabama Power runs the lake, and work in the lakebed or inside its flood easement could require a permit from its shoreline office, so ask before anything near the water is touched. Backing up to the Bankhead
Plenty of private tracts in Winston County share a boundary with national forest, and that boundary matters. We clear to the line you show us, so have it surveyed and flagged before a machine comes. The Forest Service keeps its Bankhead office in Double Springs if you have questions about the federal side. On your side, a mulched fire lane along the boundary and around the house or cabin gives a fire somewhere to stop, and it doubles as a trail you can ride. Lanes like that are cut with the same mulcher that clears the lot.
Getting in and getting water off
US-278 crosses the county east to west through Double Springs. Off the highways, this is hill country, and access decides how a job starts. Before pricing we ask about the gate, any bridge, low limbs and the first hundred feet of the drive, because every machine arrives on a trailer.
