The Buttahatchee and its bottoms
The Buttahatchee River crosses Marion County and runs through Hamilton, which sits in its valley. From there it heads southwest toward Lamar County and Mississippi. Along the river and the creeks that feed it there is bottom land with thick understory, and it stays soft after rain. Tracked machines carry low ground pressure, so they work ground a wheeled machine would rut, but a wet bottom still sets the schedule. Streams and wetlands come under the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, so ask them before clearing right up to the water.
Big timber is a clearing job
A mulching head takes brush, saplings and standing hardwood up to roughly six to eight inches on the stump. Past that, the dozer goes to work. Trees are pushed, stumps are combed out with the root rake, the big root balls are lifted whole with the excavator, and the holes are filled and graded. After the loggers leave
A fresh cutover is hard to walk and harder to use. Tops and slash lie where they fell, and the hardwood stumps start sprouting. I-22 passes around Hamilton, where US-43 and US-278 meet, so a trailer reaches most of the county on good road. What matters is the last stretch: the gate, any bridge and the first hundred feet of the drive.
