Very little of Walker County is flat. It sits on the Cumberland Plateau, which here means narrow valleys, broad ridge tops and oak and pine on the slopes between. The Warrior Coal Field runs under all of it, and by 1900 only Jefferson County was digging more coal. So a tract here can be a steep wooded hollow, a ridge somebody logged, or, in places, ground that was strip mined years ago and has grown back. Each one clears differently, and each one has to be looked at.

Hollows, ridges and the forks of the Warrior
Three forks of the Black Warrior River drain this county. The Mulberry Fork passes Cordova, the Sipsey Fork comes down from Smith Lake, and they meet the Locust Fork at the Jefferson County line. Everything in between sheds water hard, and on a hillside bare dirt washes. That is the reason slopes get mulched where they can be. The tracked machine grinds brush and saplings and leaves a chip floor that holds the soil. The dozer is saved for the spots that have to be bare, like a pad or a drive.
Access comes first
On steep ground the first question is how a truck gets in. Plenty of hill tracts have nothing but an old logging trace between the road and the place you want to build. We cut drives and access roads with a crown and ditches so water sheds off the sides and stays out of the wheel tracks, and we set culverts where a draw has to be crossed. Smith Lake lots and mined ground
Lewis Smith Lake reaches into the north side of Walker County out past Curry. It is an Alabama Power reservoir, and work in the lakebed or inside the company's flood easement could require a permit from its shoreline office, so ask before anything near the water is cut or graded.
