North of the river: hills, timber and lake lots
Up US-43 toward the Fayette County line, the land is ridge and hollow under pine and hardwood. Lake Tuscaloosa lies in the middle of it. The lake was made by damming the North River, and it supplies the city's drinking water. In and around the city: lots with houses either side
Around Tuscaloosa and Northport the work is tighter. A wooded lot between two houses. An overgrown back line full of privet. A worn-out house coming down so something new can go up. Machines on tracks get into places like that without rutting the yard next door, and the mulcher leaves chips, not a burn pile, which matters where neighbors are close. South and west: the coastal plain
Below the fall line the ground flattens out toward Hale and Greene counties and holds water longer. Timing matters more there than horsepower. Tracked machines spread their weight, so they can cross soft ground that would bog a wheeled tractor, but some bottoms simply have to dry first. Out US-82 past Coker toward the Pickens County line, old pasture gone to sweetgum and briars is mulching work. Where a field stays wet or a drive keeps washing, the fix is drainage: grade reshaped, ditches and swales cut, and culverts sized for the water above them.
