Two railroads crossed here in 1890, and the town that grew at the junction was named on January 1, 1891, for the first telegraph operator to work it. Coal mining started nearby in 1918, and Parrish incorporated in 1922. It is a small place, about two square miles. Old power plant country
For just over a century the landmark everybody knew near Parrish was Plant Gorgas, the Alabama Power coal plant where Baker Creek meets the Mulberry Fork. It opened in 1917 and shut down on April 15, 2019. The land around a place like that has been mined, logged and built on, then left. Expect narrow hollows, old benches and thick growth. Every gravel drive that fails, fails the same way: water got on it and had nowhere to go. It runs down the wheel tracks, takes the fines with it and leaves a washboard and a gully.
