Barn and Outbuilding Demolition in Hamilton, AL
Hamilton sits in the Buttahatchee River valley, with farms and timber on the roads in every direction. Many of those places still have an old barn or shed that has outlasted its use. Down South takes it down, hauls it away, digs out the foundation and grades the spot.

Barn Demolition in Hamilton
A county seat on the Buttahatchee
Hamilton started out as Toll Gate, named for Alabama's first toll gate on Andrew Jackson's Military Road. It was later renamed for Capt. A. J. Hamilton, who donated land for the town, and it became the Marion County seat. The Buttahatchee River runs through the city, just east of downtown.
Despite its spot in the state's northwest corner, Marion County lies in the East Gulf Coastal Plain. Around Hamilton that means a river valley with farm and timber ground on every side. Interstate 22 now loops around the south and west sides of town, and US-43 and US-278 meet in the middle of it.
From cotton to cattle
Cotton led Marion County farming until the 1930s. After that, farms turned to cattle, corn and soybeans, and timber grew into a major business by the mid-1900s. Every change left buildings standing: hay barns, cattle sheds, equipment sheds and the odd chicken house.
When land is sold or divided, those buildings often go with it to someone who has no use for them. That is usually when the call comes. Sometimes a buyer wants the barn gone before closing, and sometimes an heir just wants the land clean. Either way, the job is the same.
Taking a barn down
Down South brings the building down with the excavator and loads it out. Tin, lumber, poles and block all leave on the trucks. The slab and footings come out below grade, so the ground is clean for whatever comes next. Concrete feed troughs and old loading chutes are broken out and hauled along with it.
Anything that needs asbestos abatement is outside this work. If a building's siding or roofing is suspect, that is answered before a date is set. A sound barn may be worth keeping, but one with rotted poles and a failing roof is usually past a sensible repair.
River bottom and wet ground
Land near the Buttahatchee and its creeks can stay soft long after a rain. Down South's machines are all tracked, which keeps them moving where a truck would sink. Loaded debris trucks still need firm ground, so the haul route is planned at the estimate, and sometimes the work waits on a dry spell. A barn on high ground near the road is the easy case, and one down in a creek bottom takes more planning.
If a barn sits in a low spot, the footprint can be filled and shaped so it does not hold water once the building is gone.
Lines, locates and permits
Have the power company disconnect service to the building before work starts. Power the owner ran out to a barn is private, and Alabama 811 does not mark it, so walk those lines at the estimate. The 811 request goes in at least two business days ahead of any digging.
Inside Hamilton's city limits, ask the city about a demolition permit before a date is fixed. If the barn is in a mapped floodplain near the river, ask about bringing in fill as well. See the demolition permit guide.
Pricing and what comes next
The estimate is free. The figure depends on the size and makeup of the building, the slab, the haul distance and the ground. Small jobs carry a minimum, and you have that number in hand before you commit.
With the barn gone, the spot is ready for something new. Excavating in Hamilton covers pads and site work, and gravel driveway work in Hamilton covers the road in. If the old house has to go too, see house demolition in Hamilton. The main barn demolition page has the rest. Other jobs on the same place, done on the same trip, save moving the machines twice.

Questions people ask
Not seeing yours? Call (205) 535-6376 and ask Down South, or read the guides.
Do you work on farms out from Hamilton?
Yes. Most barn work is outside town, on farms and timber tracts along the county roads around Hamilton. Down South comes out, looks at the building and the way in, and gives a figure before anything is scheduled.
Can a barn near the river be torn down?
Yes, though wet ground can change the timing. Tracked machines handle soft ground, but loaded trucks need a firm route out. If the property is in a mapped floodplain, check before any fill is brought in to level the spot.
Will you haul off everything, including the concrete?
Yes. Tin, lumber, poles, block and broken concrete all leave the property. The footings and slab are dug out below grade, and the hole is filled and graded. If you would rather keep the slab for reuse, say so at the estimate.
How much does barn removal cost in Hamilton?
It depends on the building's size and materials, whether a slab and footings come out, how far debris travels and how easy the site is to reach. There is no published price. The estimate is free, small jobs carry a minimum, and the figure is given before you commit.
