Barn and Outbuilding Demolition in Jasper, AL

Walker County is ridge and hollow country, and its old homeplaces tend to come with a barn, a smokehouse or a shed tucked into the slope behind them. When one is past saving, Down South takes it down, hauls it off, digs out what is under it and grades the ground back.

Barn Demolition in Jasper

Old homeplaces in hill country

Walker County lies in the Cumberland Plateau, with broad tops and narrow valleys covered in oak and pine. Coal and timber drove the county from the late 1800s on, and families kept small farms in the hollows around the mines and the rail lines.

Many of those places have since been split up, inherited or sold. What is left is often an outbuilding nobody uses: a barn with a sagging roof, a block shed, a car shed open on one side. If the house on the place has to go as well, see house demolition in Jasper.

Buildings set into a slope

Flat ground was scarce, so barns went where they would fit, often cut into the hillside with one wall low and one wall high. Taking that down is not just pushing it over, because the uphill side may be holding dirt back.

Down South takes the building down and then deals with the bank. The cut is reshaped to a slope that stands and drains, so the ground does not slide into the hole the barn left. Where a bank needs real support, retaining walls are part of the services.

Tin, timber and block

Most Jasper outbuildings are some mix of rough-sawn lumber, metal roofing and concrete block. All of it is loaded and hauled away. The footings and any slab come out below grade, so a future building is not sitting on half an old foundation. Old block walls are heavy, so they are broken up on site to load cleanly. Brick from an old flue or chimney goes out with the block.

Buildings that need asbestos abatement are outside this work. If the siding or roofing is in question, that is sorted out before a date is set.

Getting machines up the hill

Narrow drives and steep yards are normal here. Down South's machines all run on tracks, which grip a slope and spread their weight on soft ground. The excavator pulls the building down and loads it, and the track loader or dozer cleans up and grades.

If the drive in is washed or too narrow, it may need work first. A pipe at a wet crossing is covered under culvert installation in Jasper. A soft spot partway up a hill is exactly where a loaded truck would get stuck, so the haul route is settled before the day.

Utilities and paperwork

Before anything comes down, the power company should cut off any service to the building. Power that the owner ran from the house to a shed is a private line, and Alabama 811 does not mark it. The 811 request itself has to be in at least two business days before digging. Where a barn once had water piped to it, that old line may still be in the ground and is yours, not the water system's.

If the property is inside Jasper's city limits, check with the city about a demolition permit before scheduling. The guide to demolition permits in Alabama has more.

The footprint afterward

With the building gone, the spot is filled and graded so it sheds water. On a hillside that matters more, because a soft hole collects runoff from above. If water is a wider problem on the lot, yard drainage in Jasper can be handled at the same time.

The estimate is free. Price depends on the building, the slab, the haul and how hard the site is to get to, and a small job carries a minimum that is quoted before you commit. More is on the main barn demolition page.

Questions about this work

Questions people ask

Not seeing yours? Call (205) 535-6376 and ask Down South, or read the guides.

Can you take down a barn built into a hill?

Yes. The building comes down, and then the bank behind it is reshaped so it stands on its own and drains. If the slope is too steep to lay back, a retaining wall may be the answer. Down South looks at the bank during the estimate.

What happens to the old lumber and tin?

It is loaded and hauled off with the rest of the debris. If you want to keep some boards or a few sheets of tin for another use, say so at the estimate so it can be talked through before work starts.

Is a permit needed in Jasper?

Inside the city limits, call the City of Jasper before a date is set. Outside them, check with Walker County. Either way, utilities serving the building must be shut off first, and Alabama 811 is notified before footings are dug out.

How much does it cost to tear down a barn near Jasper?

That depends on the size and makeup of the building, whether a slab and footings come out, the slope, the haul and the access. There is no set price. The estimate is free, small jobs carry a minimum, and you get the figure before you commit.
