The town began as a stop on Jackson's Military Road and sits high for this part of Alabama, near 890 feet, right on the Tennessee Valley Divide. Rebuilt ground
On April 27, 2011, an EF5 tornado tore through Hackleburg and destroyed most of the town. People here rebuilt, and a new school complex opened a few years later. Storm-thrown timber leaves a long tail, though: leaning trunks, root balls tipped out of the ground, and thickets that come up in the light afterward. Mulching takes the regrowth. Divide country: hills and hollows
The town centre sits on the watershed, so ground around Hackleburg drops toward Bear Creek on one side and the Clifty Creek branches on the other. Dismals Canyon, a National Natural Landmark, is cut into the same country a few miles to the northeast. Steep ground costs more to work than flat ground, and we say so before we start. US-43 and State Highway 172
US-43 and State Highway 172 cross in the middle of town. US-43 carries you southwest to Hamilton, the county seat, and north toward Russellville. Along those roads and the county roads off them, a new house or shop needs the same things: a cleared spot, a pad cut and compacted in lifts, and a drive with a culvert where it meets the ditch. Can a forestry mulcher work on the steep hills around Hackleburg?
On many slopes, yes. A tracked loader spreads its weight and holds a hillside better than a wheeled machine, and mulching leaves roots and chips in place so the slope does not wash.
