Earthen mounds on a bluff above the Black Warrior River gave Moundville its name. The town itself is younger than it sounds. The first settlement here, in 1823, was called Carthage. A. H. Griffin bought 600 acres in 1891 and started the present town. Below the fall line the river valley widens, and around town it is fields, timber and river bottom.

Farm ground going back to brush
This has been farm country for a long time. When a pickle company set up in Moundville in 1914, local farmers took up cucumbers as a cash crop. Fields that fall out of use here do what they do everywhere in west Alabama: sweetgum and blackberry first, then a thicket, then timber. The longer it sits, the more the fix costs. Near the mounds
Moundville Archaeological Park, run by the University of Alabama's museums, covers the mound site beside town. The park preserves Mississippian earthen mounds and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This part of Hale County has been lived on for a very long time.
