Timber, farming and milling carried Vernon before and after the Civil War, and lumber mills gave Lamar County a boost into the early 1900s. Oak and pine still cover much of the county. Is it better to bush hog or mulch an overgrown field in Lamar County?
It depends on stem size. A bush hog is built for grass, weeds and stems no thicker than a thumb. Once a field has sweetgum, pine saplings and privet with woody stems, a bush hog rides over it or breaks. A mulcher grinds standing hardwood up to roughly six to eight inches on the stump.
