Working in Sulligent

Clearing, Mulching & Dirt Work in Sulligent

Two railroad men, Sullivan and Sargent, had their names spliced together to make Sulligent. The rails are still here: a BNSF line runs east and west through town, and US-278 and State Highway 17 cross at the centre. Sulligent sits in the north of Lamar County, with the Buttahatchee River just north of town. It is inside our service area, and we take land clearing, forestry mulching and dirt work jobs here.

Cotton built this town. The Sulligent Cotton Oil Company's gin was once known as the largest under one roof. Fields that grew cotton do not stay open on their own. Two or three seasons unused and a field is in sweetgum and blackberry. We bring it back with a tracked mulcher, or with the dozer and root rake when the stumps have to go. We look at it, then price it, and the estimate is free. Call or text (205) 535-6376.

Buttahatchee bottom land

State Highway 17 crosses the Buttahatchee River north of Sulligent, and the bottom along the river spreads wide in high water. Bottom land is rich and it is wet. Hunting tracts along it need lanes, trails and food plot openings, and the work has to be timed for when the ground will carry a machine. See hunting lanes and food plots. Near a river or a wetland, check with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers before any dirt is moved.

Drives and culverts

On low ground, water sits unless you give it a way out. Most drive trouble comes down to two things: no crown, and no culvert where the ditch crosses. We set driveway and field-road culverts with the excavator, bedded, backfilled and covered, and shape the drive so it sheds. Details are on our culvert installation page. If your entrance is on US-278 or Highway 17, ask ALDOT what it requires before the pipe goes in.

Old home places and field edges

Early settlers here built near Andrew Jackson's Military Road, and the Sulligent area has home places far older than the town itself. When a house, barn or shed is past use, we take it down, haul the debris to a permitted site and grade the footprint. Field edges that have crept in get mulched back to the original line. More about the county is on our Lamar County land clearing page.

Questions

Sulligent Questions

More answers on our FAQ page and in the guides.

Do you clear hunting land along the Buttahatchee River near Sulligent?

Yes. We open shooting lanes, trails and food plot clearings with the mulcher, which leaves stumps cut low and the ground covered. River bottom has to be dry enough to carry a tracked machine, so timing matters, and late summer into fall is often the driest stretch. Ride the place with us so the lanes line up with your stands. Call or text (205) 535-6376.

How much does it cost to put a culvert in a driveway in Sulligent, AL?

The price moves with the pipe size and length, how much digging and fill the crossing needs, the rock to cover it, and how easy the spot is to reach. We size the pipe for the water that comes to it, bed it, backfill it and keep the ends open. You get a figure after we look, and the estimate is free. Small jobs carry a minimum that you hear up front.

Can you turn grown-up cotton or pasture land near Sulligent back into a field?

Yes. Brush, briars and saplings get mulched in place so the topsoil stays put. If you plan to plow or cut hay, stumps come out with the root rake or excavator and the holes get filled. What the soil needs after that is a question for a soil test and the county Extension office. Our guide on clearing land for pasture goes step by step.

How a Job Runs

Tell Us What You Have

Call, text or send the form. County, rough acreage, what is growing on it and how a truck and trailer gets in.

We Look at the Ground

Close by, we come and look. Farther off, we can go over it with you on satellite first, then see it on the ground before the work starts.

A Number to Plan Around

Estimates are free and priced off the property. Small jobs carry a minimum, and you hear the figure before you commit.

The Machines Go to Work

We settle what comes out and what stays. Mark the trees you want kept, or walk it with us and point them out.

Finished, Not Just Knocked Down

Holes filled, ground pulled back to grade, and the fall set so water leaves the site instead of standing on it.
