House Demolition in Jasper

A house that has to go, and a lot you can use after

Jasper grew fast once the railroads came through in 1886, and a town with that much history has plenty of houses that have outlived their use. Some are on small lots near the middle of town. More are out on the ridges and down in the hollows, on land that has been split up and sold. Either way the problem is the same. The building is costing you money and the ground under it is worth more empty.

Is it a mobile home instead of a house? See mobile home removal in Jasper.

Demolition is four jobs, and we do all four with our own machines. The building comes down. The debris is loaded and leaves for a permitted site. The slab, footings and any block foundation are broken out and removed. Then the footprint is filled in lifts, packed and graded so it sheds water. Skip the last step and you have traded a derelict house for a soft spot in the yard.

Walker County is next door to us, so Jasper is close to home. If the place is grown up so badly you cannot see the porch, we can open the drive and clean up around the building on the same visit. See what else we do on the main house and structure demolition page, or our other work on the Jasper land clearing page.

Jasper Building Inspections

Inside the city, permits run through the Jasper Building Inspections Department. The city lists the office at the City Hall Annex and says it issues permits for building, plumbing, HVAC and electrical work. The same staff handle nuisance abatement on unsafe structures, so they are the people to ask if the city has already sent a letter about the house. Ask them what a teardown at your address needs before work is booked. Our Alabama demolition permit guide explains the usual steps.

Old coal country under the footprint

Walker County was built on coal, and the ground shows it. Steep hollows and ridge lines sit beside reclaimed mine land. A house on reclaimed ground may be sitting on loose spoil, broken rock or old fill, and what is under the slab can change within a few feet. That matters when the hole is filled. We find out what is there as we dig, tell you what we find, and build the fill up in packed layers so the new surface holds.

ADEM notification on regulated buildings

For Walker County, asbestos notification goes to ADEM, the state agency. Its Form 496, the Notice of Asbestos Abatement and/or Demolition, is due 10 weekdays before a regulated demolition starts, and the form says that applies with or without asbestos in the building. ADEM also says a privately owned residence of four or fewer units that remains residential property is exempt from the asbestos regulations. Which side your Jasper building falls on is ADEM's call, so ask them, and tell us how old the structure is.

Jasper House Demolition Questions

Who do I call about a demolition permit in Jasper, Alabama?

Start with the City of Jasper Building Inspections Department, in the City Hall Annex. Tell them the address and that the structure is coming down, and ask what they need from you. Outside the city limits, ask Walker County. Have your permit in hand, or ask us what to line up first.

How much does it cost to demolish a house in Jasper, AL?

It depends on the building, so we price it after a look. What moves the number is the size of the house, what it is built of, whether it sits on a slab or a crawl space, how easily trucks get in and out, and whether asbestos has to be handled first. Estimates are free. Our demolition cost guide walks through each one.

Can you tear down a burned house in Walker County?

Yes. A fire-damaged house comes down the same way as any other, with the debris loaded and hauled to a permitted site. Talk to your insurance adjuster and the city or county first, and tell us if anyone has told you to leave the building as it is for now. Then call or text us with the address.

Will you remove the slab and foundation after a Jasper house demolition?

Yes, unless you tell us to leave it. Some people keep a slab for a shop floor or a carport, and that is fine. Otherwise the concrete is broken out and hauled, block and footings come out with it, and the hole is filled in layers and packed before the lot is graded.
