Forestry Mulching in Double Springs, AL

Private land around Double Springs is steep, wooded and often shares a line with the national forest. A tracked mulcher clears brush, opens lanes and cuts fire lines there without baring the slope.

Forestry Mulching in Double Springs

Mulching in rugged Winston County

National forest wraps around Double Springs. The Winston County seat sits inside the William B. Bankhead National Forest, near Lewis Smith Lake, where US-278 and Highway 195 cross. Private land here is steep, wooded and often borders federal ground: low hills in pine giving way to gorges, rock bluffs and hardwood hollows. It is some of the most rugged country in our eight counties, and a mulcher on tracks is built for it.

The mulching head is a steel drum with carbide teeth. It grinds briars, greenbrier, privet, sweetgum, pine saplings and standing hardwood up to roughly six to eight inches on the stump, and drops the chips where the plant stood. Roots stay in the ground. On a hillside that is the whole point: the slope is cleared and covered in the same pass.

Double Springs is inside our service area, and Winston is one of the eight counties we cover from Berry, in Fayette County. Call or text (205) 535-6376 and tell us where the tract is and how you get to it. Access is usually the first question on this ground. Estimates are free. Three things particular to Double Springs

Private land beside the national forest

When your neighbour is the Bankhead, the property line is not something to guess at. We clear to the line you show us, so have the corners found and flagged by a surveyor before any cutting near the boundary. The Bankhead Ranger District office is in Double Springs, and that is the place to ask about anything that touches forest land. A mulched strip along a boundary does double duty as a fire lane. We cut those too: see firebreaks and fire lanes.

Gorges, bluffs and rock

Winston County runs from low rolling hills to gorges and rock bluffs, and a single tract around Double Springs can have all of it. A mulcher works the benches, the ridge tops and the slopes a tracked machine can hold. It does not work a bluff. Rock near the surface slows the head and wears the teeth, so it is part of the price. We look at the ground with you and mark what a machine can reach. On a steep tract, the part we can reach is usually the part you would use anyway.

Close to Smith Lake

Double Springs is near Lewis Smith Lake, and a good deal of the land on this side of Winston County is lake lots and the ground behind them. Mulching opens a view and leaves the bank covered. Building is a different job, since stumps come out and a drive goes in, and Alabama Power has its own rules for the shoreline. Our page on lot clearing on Smith Lake covers the lake side of it from the first phone call to finished grade.

Cutting The Lane
Can you clear land that borders the Bankhead National Forest near Double Springs?

On your side of the line, yes. The line has to be known first. Have a surveyor find and flag the corners, and we clear to what you show us. For any question about the forest boundary itself, ask the Bankhead Ranger District office in Double Springs before work starts.

Can a mulcher get into steep hollows in Winston County?

Into a lot of them. The machines run on tracks, which hold a slope and spread the weight. Some ground is too steep or too rocky for any machine, and we tell you that when we see it. Access matters as much as slope. Tell us about the gate, any bridge and the first stretch of the drive.

When should I cut shooting lanes on hunting land near Double Springs?

Well ahead of the season, so the woods settle before you hunt them. We will still cut in September, but that is the costly way round. Our guide on when to cut hunting lanes and food plots lays out the timing.

Do you put in firebreaks around a cabin or timber in Double Springs, AL?

Yes. A mulched break around a cabin, a stand of timber or along a property line is work we take. We cut the line and the burn is yours to plan. If you mean to burn, the Alabama Forestry Commission issues burn permits, and county or seasonal burn bans can apply, so check with them first.
