Pads on the plateau, and on the lake side
Cullman builds on a plateau. The Encyclopedia of Alabama places the whole county on the Cumberland Plateau, and Alabama Extension says most slopes on the level plateau land are under 10 percent. That is kind ground for a house pad: a modest cut, a modest fill and a firm base not far down. The catch is that the firm base is sandstone, and it can turn up sooner than the plans expect.
We build house pads and building pads in Cullman and around the county: house sites, shop and barn pads, pole barn sites, manufactured home pads and pads for equipment or shipping containers. The cut side goes down to firm ground. The fill side is built in lifts and compacted as it goes. The finished pad is graded so water runs away from the building, and your builder or concrete crew takes it from there.
With plans or surveyor's stakes, we build to them. Without them, the pad is set off the existing grade so it drains and the drive comes in at a workable slope. The estimate is free and comes off the lot itself, and we can look at it with you on satellite first if you live away. Wooded lot? See land clearing in Cullman.

What plateau ground means for a pad
Shallow sandstone under the pad
USDA describes Hartsells soil, common on the broad plateau tops of north Alabama, as fine sandy loam over sandstone bedrock 20 to 40 inches down. For a pad that is mostly good news. Rock is a solid thing to build on. It matters when the cut has to go deeper than the rock, when footings or plumbing trenches have to go into it, or when one corner of the pad lands on rock and the other on fill. We cut to what is firm, tell you where the rock is, and build the fill side so it matches.
Farm buildings and big flat pads
The Encyclopedia of Alabama lists poultry and beef cattle first among Cullman County's farm products, so many pads here are for buildings and not houses: a shop, an equipment shed, a hay barn, a pole barn. A long building wants a pad that is truly flat end to end and a little higher than the ground around it. The topsoil comes off first, the fill goes in packed lifts, and gravel can go on top if you want a working surface. See shop and barn pads.
Smith Lake lots and the offices to ask
West of Cullman the plateau breaks off toward Lewis Smith Lake, and lake lots are steep. A pad there is a bench cut into the slope, and Alabama Power has shoreline rules for the lake, so check them before clearing or grading near the water. Inside the city limits, the City of Cullman Building Inspection Department issues building permits. On county roads, ask the Cullman County Road Department what it requires for the pipe under the drive. Bigger sites, an acre or more of disturbed ground, fall under the construction stormwater permit that ADEM runs.

What does a house pad cost in Cullman, AL?
The size of the pad, the slope, how much fill it needs, whether rock gets in the way of the cut and how easy the lot is to reach all move the price. Level plateau lots move less dirt than lake lots. The house pad cost guide explains each factor. Estimates are free.
Can you build a pad for a pole barn or shop in Cullman County?
Yes. Shop, barn, pole barn, carport and equipment pads are standard pad work: topsoil stripped, high side cut, low side filled in compacted lifts, and the top graded flat with fall to shed water. It can be finished in dirt or gravel. Tell us the building size and which way the doors face.
Does rock under a lot in Cullman cause problems for a house pad?
Usually less than people fear. Sandstone under a pad is firm ground. It becomes a problem when the cut, the footings or the plumbing trenches have to go down into it, because that is slower digging. We tell you where the rock is as soon as we find it so you and your builder can plan.
Do you build house pads on Smith Lake lots on the Cullman County side?
Yes, the lake side of Cullman County is inside our service area. Lake lots are steep, so the pad is a bench with a cut bank above and compacted fill below, and it usually needs an access road first. Check Alabama Power's shoreline rules and the county's requirements before work near the water.
