Most years the weather trouble here is rain and wind, not snow, and an EF2 tornado came through the area in 2017. Low enough to hold water
Reform sits at about 240 feet, far lower than the hill country of Marion and Winston counties. Low ground is easy to work when dry and holds water when wet, so grade matters. Crossroads and the airport
US-82 runs through Reform toward Gordo and Tuscaloosa one way and Columbus, Mississippi, the other. Highway 17 runs north to Millport and south to Carrollton, the county seat. Do I need a permit to clear land in Pickens County near Reform?
It depends on the job, and the offices that decide are the ones to ask. Larger land disturbance can need an ADEM construction stormwater permit. Work in wetlands or streams involves the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Burning involves the Alabama Forestry Commission. Inside town limits, ask Reform city hall. What time of year is driest for dirt work around Reform?
Late summer and fall are usually the driest stretch in west Alabama, and winter and early spring the wettest. Low Pickens County ground shows the difference more than most. Mulching can go on through much of the year when the ground will carry the machine. Grading, pads and drives go faster and finish cleaner on dry dirt, so it pays to plan those ahead of the wet months.
