The rest of the year Gordo is a quiet place on US-82 in east-central Pickens County, the first Pickens County town on the road out from Northport and Tuscaloosa. State Highway 159 runs north from here to Fayette, the seat of our home county. That road is how we come, and Gordo is inside our service area.
Being on the Tuscaloosa side of the county, Gordo is a natural place to buy a few acres and build. Pickens County is East Gulf Coastal Plain: pine and oak on the uplands, lower and wetter along the creeks. Gordo sits at about 285 feet. Forestry has been a major industry here from the late 1800s, and a sawmill was running at Gordo as early as 1831. For a landowner that means pine thickets, cutover and old logging roads grown shut. Drives off US-82 and the county roads
For a Gordo home site the drive comes first, because a concrete truck has to get in. We cut drives, lay base rock, crown them so water sheds to the sides, and ditch both edges. Where the drive meets a road ditch, a culvert goes in, sized for the water that comes to it. An entrance onto US-82 or a state route is ALDOT's to approve, and a county road is the county engineer's, so ask before the pipe is ordered.
