Yard Drainage and Grading in Fayette, AL

Fayette is the county seat and the closest town to Down South's home in Berry. Most yards around here have no storm drain, just a road ditch and the lay of the land. When water sits by the house or cuts across the yard, the ground gets reshaped to send it where it belongs.

Yard Drainage in Fayette

A county seat in rural country

Fayette has carried several names since 1821, from La Fayette to Fayette Court House, before settling on Fayette in 1898. It is still the county's largest town, with a little over 4,300 people at the 2020 census. The county as a whole is counted as entirely rural.

That shapes the drainage work. In town there are streets and some curbs. Out on the county roads there is a ditch, a pipe under each drive and whatever slope the land happens to have. Without a storm drain to lean on, the shape of the yard itself does most of the work.

Two kinds of ground

Fayette County spans two kinds of country. The western part lies in the East Gulf Coastal Plain, and the eastern part is in the Cumberland Plateau. The Sipsey River runs through the middle of the county, the North River through the east and Luxapalila Creek through the west.

So a drainage job near Fayette can mean flat, slow ground where water sits, or rolling ground where it runs. Down South works out which one your yard is before deciding how to move the water. Flat ground needs a long, steady fall, and rolling ground needs the water slowed before it starts to cut.

The road ditch is usually the outlet

On a country lot, rain from the yard usually ends up in the road ditch. Trouble starts when the ditch is filled in, the pipe under the drive is crushed or set too high, or the yard slopes toward the house before it ever reaches the road.

The fix is often a mix: reshape the yard, cut a swale to the ditch and reset the pipe under the drive. A pipe in a county road right-of-way needs the county's permit first. The driveway culvert permit guide and culvert installation in Fayette cover that side.

Homes that hold water underneath

Manufactured homes are built in Fayette County, and plenty sit on lots around town. A home set on a pad lower than the yard around it will collect water underneath. So will one where the yard was never shaped after the setup crew left. Skirting holds damp air in, so a wet pad under a home tends to stay wet.

Raising the ground around the home and cutting the yard to fall away usually dries it out. If an old home has to go first, see mobile home removal in Fayette.

Machines, locates and limits

The machines are a Cat dozer, a Cat compact track loader and an excavator, all on tracks. Which one goes on a job depends on the size of the yard and how it can be reached. Tracks also keep a soft yard from being torn up worse than it already is.

Alabama 811 is contacted before digging, at least two business days ahead, as the law requires. Lines you own, such as power to a shop or the line out to a septic tank, are not on 811's list, so show them at the estimate. Gutters and basement waterproofing are outside the work.

Pricing a Fayette yard

Estimates are free, and Fayette is close to home. The price comes from what the yard needs: how much dirt moves, whether fill is hauled in, whether a pipe goes in and how far the water must travel. Small jobs carry a minimum, and you know that figure before you say yes. When the yard needs a culvert as well, that is part of the same figure.

For the full service, see yard drainage and grading. For clearing and other work around town, see the Fayette land clearing page.

What it includes

What that covers

  • Water under the home. Ground raised around the pad and shaped to drain.
  • Yards that slope in. Regraded so the fall runs away from the house.
  • Ditch connections. Swales cut to carry yard water out to the road ditch.
  • Drive pipes. Crushed or high culverts reset to grade.

Questions about this work

Questions people ask

Not seeing yours? Call (205) 535-6376 and ask Down South, or read the guides.

Can you fix water standing under my mobile home?

Usually, if the ground around it is the cause. The yard is raised and shaped so it falls away from the home, and the water is given a path to the ditch or a low corner. If the home sits in a hole lower than everything around it, that takes more fill and more shaping.

Who handles the pipe under my driveway at the road?

If the pipe sits in a county road right-of-way, the county has to issue a permit before it is replaced. Down South can set it once that is in hand. Inside the City of Fayette, ask the city about anything along a street.

Do you work outside the city limits?

Yes. Most of the work around Fayette is out on county roads, on acreage, farm lots and home sites. Down South is based in Berry, in the same county, so rural Fayette County is close to home.

How is the price worked out?

From the yard itself. How much ground has to move, how much fill comes in, whether a culvert is needed and how far the water has to go all count. There is no published price list. Small jobs carry a minimum, and the figure is given before you agree to anything.
