Yard Drainage and Grading in Tuscaloosa, AL

Tuscaloosa sits where the hills give out and the flat ground begins, so some yards shed water too fast and others hold it for days. Down South regrades the yard, cuts swales and sets culverts so rain runs away from the house instead of toward it.

Yard Drainage in Tuscaloosa

A city on the fall line

Tuscaloosa was built where the Black Warrior River drops off the fall line. To the northeast the land is wooded hills. Toward the southwest it flattens into a low, marshy plain. That split shows up in the drainage calls.

On the hill side of town, the trouble is speed. Rain comes off the slope above, cuts a gully through the yard and drops silt against the foundation. On the low side, the trouble is the opposite. Water lands, finds nowhere lower to go, and sits long after the storm has passed.

The yard that holds a puddle for days

The most common call is a back yard that turns to mush after every rain. Often it was graded flat to begin with, or it settled toward the house over the years. Sometimes a neighbour built up their lot and the water now stops on yours.

Down South looks at where the water comes from and where it could go. The fix is usually a reshaped yard with a gentle fall away from the foundation. A shallow swale then carries the water to the street, a ditch or a low corner that can take it. Fill is brought in where the ground has to come up.

Gullies on the hillside lots

Where a lot slopes hard, slowing the water matters as much as moving it. A swale cut across the slope catches runoff before it reaches the house and walks it around to one side.

Where a driveway crosses that path, a pipe under the drive keeps the gravel from washing out. Culvert installation in Tuscaloosa covers that part. If the drive is already rutted from years of runoff, gravel driveway work in Tuscaloosa can go on the same visit, and the guide on why gravel driveways wash out explains the cause.

Flood zones, permits and buried lines

The City of Tuscaloosa's land development rules generally exempt grading on a lot with a single-family house, unless the house sits in a flood hazard area. Erosion control is still required either way. If your lot is near a creek or in a mapped flood zone, check with the city engineer's office before any dirt moves.

Buried lines are a separate question. Alabama law requires a locate request through Alabama 811 at least two business days before digging, and the service is free. Sprinkler pipe and power run to a detached shop belong to you, so 811 will not mark them.

What the work is, and what it is not

This is dirt work: regrading, swales, ditches, culverts and fill, done with a Cat dozer, a Cat compact track loader and an excavator. All of them run on tracks, which spreads the weight on ground that is already soft. A small back yard may only need the track loader, while a long ditch along a property line is excavator work.

Gutters, downspout plumbing and basement waterproofing are other trades. If water is coming through a basement wall, grading helps by keeping water away from it, but the wall itself is someone else's job. The whole service is described on yard drainage and grading.

Getting a price on a wet yard

The estimate is free. Down South walks the yard, ideally soon after a rain, and prices off what it finds: how much ground has to move, whether fill comes in, how far the water has to travel and how easy the yard is to get into. If part of the fix is a culvert or a road ditch, it goes into the same figure instead of turning up later as an extra.

Small jobs carry a minimum, and that figure is on the table before you agree to anything. Other work around the city, from lot clearing to brush, is on the Tuscaloosa land clearing page.

What it includes

What that covers

  • Standing water. Low spots filled and the yard shaped so rain runs off.
  • Water at the foundation. Ground regraded so it falls away from the house.
  • Hillside runoff. Swales cut across the slope to turn water aside.
  • Driveway crossings. Culverts set under the drive where water needs to pass.

Questions people ask

Not seeing yours? Call (205) 535-6376 and ask Down South, or read the guides.

Do I need a permit to regrade my yard in Tuscaloosa?

Usually not for a lot with a single-family house on it, under the city's land development rules. The exception is a house in a flood hazard area. Erosion control is required regardless. If you are near a creek or unsure of your flood zone, ask the city engineer's office first.

Can you stop water getting into my crawl space?

Often, yes, when the cause is the ground around the house. Regrading so the soil falls away from the foundation, plus a swale to carry runoff off, keeps most water out from under the house. Leaks through walls or failed gutters belong to other trades and are not part of the job.

When is the best time to have the yard looked at?

Right after a good rain, if you can manage it. Standing water shows exactly where the low spots are and where the runoff comes from. If that timing does not work, photos taken during a storm help a great deal. The estimate is free either way.

How much does yard drainage cost in Tuscaloosa?

There is no set price, because no two yards are alike. Cost depends on how much dirt has to move, whether fill is hauled in, whether a culvert is needed and how hard the yard is to reach. Small jobs carry a minimum, and Down South gives you the figure before you commit.
