Driveway Culvert Installation in Tuscaloosa, AL

Tuscaloosa sits right on the fall line, with wooded hills to the northeast and low, wet plain to the southwest. Culvert work here runs from a pipe under a steep lake-lot drive to a crossing on flat ground that floods. Down South sets both, with the ditch shaped to feed the pipe.

Culvert Installation in Tuscaloosa

Hills on one side, flat ground on the other

The city lies on the fall line of the Black Warrior River, where the Appalachian highland gives way to the Gulf Coastal Plain. Northeast of town the land is forested hills. Southwest, it flattens into low, marshy plain.

A culvert does a different job on each. In the hills it has to swallow fast water and survive it. On the flat it has to sit low enough to drain, and the ditch on each end needs some fall, which is often the hard part.

Lake lots and steep drives

Lake Tuscaloosa lies inside the city limits, and lots around it are often reached by drives that drop toward the water. Rain coming off the road above runs down those drives unless something turns it.

Down South cuts a ditch along the uphill side, sets a pipe where the water needs to cross, and builds the outlet so it does not dump onto the slope below. If the whole yard is taking water, see yard drainage in Tuscaloosa.

City streets, county roads and state routes

Inside the city, the City of Tuscaloosa's engineering department handles the right-of-way. It requires a right-of-way use permit for permanent structures there, and a street cut permit for digging into a street. Ask the city whether your entrance pipe needs one before anything is bought.

Out in the county, county-maintained roads are handled by Tuscaloosa County Public Works. State highways go through ALDOT, which permits driveway turnouts onto them. The driveway culvert permit guide lays out how the three differ.

Low ground near the river

The Black Warrior runs through the north part of the city, and low ground along it and its creeks can flood. If the property is in a mapped flood zone, ask Tuscaloosa County's floodplain management office, or the city inside the limits, before raising a drive over a new pipe.

On flat ground a pipe can only sit as low as the ditch beyond it. Down South checks where the water will go after it leaves the outlet, because a culvert that empties into a ditch with no fall just moves the puddle.

Neighborhood entrances and locates

Older neighborhoods and rural roads both have lines in the ditch: water, gas, cable and fiber. Alabama 811 is called two full working days ahead of digging, the day of the call not counted, and nothing is dug until the marks are in.

Where a mobile home is coming out before a new drive goes in, mobile home removal in Tuscaloosa can be done first. For the drive itself, see gravel driveways in Tuscaloosa.

The figure, and what moves it

Pipe diameter and length, the material, ditch depth, how far the crossing has to be built up, and any old pipe that has to come out. Distance from Berry is part of it too.

Down South gives a free estimate after seeing the crossing, and the figure comes before you commit. Small jobs carry a minimum, so a Tuscaloosa culvert is often paired with drive or drainage work. The culvert installation page has the method.

What it includes

What that covers

  • Lake-lot drives. Pipe and outlets where water crosses a steep drive.
  • Flat-ground crossings. Set low enough to drain, with fall beyond the outlet.
  • Road entrances. Built to the terms of the city, the county or ALDOT.
  • Failed pipe out. Crushed or rusted pipe dug up and replaced.

Questions about this work

Questions people ask

Not seeing yours? Call (205) 535-6376 and ask Down South, or read the guides.

Do I need a permit for a driveway culvert in Tuscaloosa?

Inside the city, ask the City of Tuscaloosa's engineering department, which issues right-of-way use and street cut permits. On a county road, ask Tuscaloosa County Public Works. On a state highway, ALDOT permits the turnout and the pipe that goes with it.

My lot is flat and the ditch holds water. Will a culvert help?

Only if the water has somewhere lower to go after the pipe. On flat ground the ditch beyond the outlet often needs regrading first. If there is no fall at all, a pipe just moves the standing water, and you will be told that plainly at the estimate.

Can a culvert go in on a lake-lot drive?

Yes. The usual fix is a ditch on the uphill side, a pipe where water has to cross, and an outlet onto ground that will not wash. Steep lots take longer to work, and that shows in the figure.

What if my drive is in the floodplain?

Raising a drive over a new pipe means adding fill, and fill in a mapped floodplain can need approval. Check with Tuscaloosa County's floodplain management office, or the city if you are inside the limits, before the work is scheduled.

How is a culvert priced in Tuscaloosa?

Off the crossing itself, after a free look: pipe size and length, material, ditch depth, fill, and any old pipe to remove. Prices are not published. Small jobs carry a minimum, and a Tuscaloosa crossing is quoted in full before you commit.
