Driveway Culvert Installation in Winfield, AL
Winfield was first called Luxapallila, after the creek that still runs past the middle of town. That creek's branches cross a lot of drives and field roads around Winfield, and that is where most culvert calls come from. Down South sets the pipe, packs it in and covers it so a truck can cross.

Culvert Installation in Winfield
A town named for a creek first
Before it was Winfield it was Luxapallila, then Needmore, and it took the name of General Winfield Scott when it incorporated. The East Branch of Luxapallila Creek runs past the town center on its way toward the Tombigbee.
That creek and the small branches feeding it drain much of the ground around town. A drive that crosses one of those branches, even one that is dry most of the year, needs a pipe big enough for the day it runs full.
Two counties, one town
Most of Winfield is in southern Marion County, but the south end of town reaches into Fayette County. For a culvert at a county road, the county that owns the road decides who you call.
Marion County roads go through the Marion County engineer in Hamilton, and Fayette County roads through the Fayette County engineer. US 43, the main road through town, is a state route, so a turnout onto it is permitted by ALDOT. Inside the city limits, ask the City of Winfield first.
Foothill ground and fast water
Winfield lies in the foothills of the Appalachians, about 26 miles east of the Mississippi line. The land rolls rather than climbs, but even a gentle rise sends a lot of water to the low end of a long drive.
The culvert goes in at that low end, set on the fall of the ditch so water does not pond at the inlet. The uphill ditch is shaped to lead water in, and the outlet is left open so it drains even when the branch is up. See gravel driveways in Winfield for the drive itself.
Pipe under a farm lane
Out from town is farm and timber ground on every side, and field roads cross branches to get from one pasture to the next. A crossing that only sees a tractor still needs the pipe bedded and covered, or the first loaded trailer crushes it.
Down South sets these with the excavator and builds the crossing wide enough for what actually uses it. A washed-out crossing is dug out, the old pipe pulled, and the new one set and packed in layers. If an old shed or barn sits where the new lane needs to go, barn demolition in Winfield handles that.
Locates and the creek
Alabama 811 is called before digging, two full working days ahead, not counting the day of the call. Water lines and phone cables often share the road ditch with the culvert.
A pipe in a creek that runs all year is a different job from one in a wet-weather branch. Work in streams can come under the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, so check before planning a pipe in Luxapallila Creek or one of its main branches. The driveway culvert permit guide covers the rest.
Pricing a Winfield culvert
There is no published price. The figure depends on the size and length of the pipe, what it is made of, the depth of the ditch, the fill and rock on top, and whether a failed pipe has to come out.
Down South looks at the crossing, then gives one figure before you commit. The estimate in Winfield is free, and small jobs carry a minimum. If you need excavating in Winfield for footings or trenches too, it can go on the same trip. More on the method is on the culvert installation page.

Questions people ask
Not seeing yours? Call (205) 535-6376 and ask Down South, or read the guides.
Which county do I call about a culvert in Winfield?
It depends where the road is. Most of Winfield is in Marion County and the south end is in Fayette County, so ask the engineer for whichever county owns the road. US 43 is a state route and goes through ALDOT, and city streets through the City of Winfield.
Can a culvert go in Luxapallila Creek?
A creek that runs all year can come under the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, so that needs checking before anything is planned. The common Winfield job is a pipe in a wet-weather branch or a road ditch, which is simpler.
My field road crossing washed out. Do I need a bigger pipe?
Maybe. A washout can come from a pipe that was too small, but also from one that was never packed, was set too high, or was blocked at the inlet. Down South looks at which it was before choosing the replacement.
Will the pipe hold a log truck or a cattle trailer?
It can, if it is the right pipe with enough cover over it and packed fill along both sides. Say what will cross it when the crossing is looked at, so the cover is built for that load.
What does culvert installation cost in Winfield?
That depends on the pipe, the ditch, the fill and gravel, and whether an old pipe comes out. Estimates are free and done on site. Small jobs carry a minimum, and the Winfield figure is given before any digging starts.
