Driveway Culvert Installation in Jasper, AL
Jasper grew up as a coal and railroad town in the hills of Walker County, and a lot of its drives drop into a hollow and climb back out. Somewhere along the way they cross water. Down South sets culverts at the road ditch and at those low crossings, so the water goes under the drive instead of through it.

Culvert Installation in Jasper
A railroad town in hill country
Jasper had about 200 people in 1886. Two rail lines arrived within two years, coal mining and coke ovens followed, and by 1890 the town had passed 3,000. Houses went up on whatever ground was close to the work, ridge or hollow.
That pattern is still there. Roads follow the high ground, drives drop off them, and the low point of many lots is a branch that only runs after rain. When it does run, it runs hard, and a crossing with no pipe gets cut in two.
Rock in the trench
The USDA's Sipsey soil series takes its type location from Walker County. It describes well-drained loam over weathered sandstone, with soft rock starting 20 to 40 inches down on ridgetops and side slopes.
That depth matters for a culvert. A trench for a big pipe with proper cover over it can reach the rock. Soft sandstone usually comes out with the excavator. A harder ledge can change where the pipe goes or how much the drive is raised over it, and Down South tells you what the trench turns up.
Sizing for water off the ridge above
A pipe at the bottom of a Walker County hollow takes the runoff from every acre above it. The pipe at a neighbor's entrance further up the hill is no guide to what yours needs.
The ditch above the pipe is cut to lead water in rather than around, and the outlet is shaped so the water does not chew a hole below the drive. Where the drive itself is shedding water down the wheel tracks, yard drainage in Jasper and the washing-out guide cover the rest.
County roads, US 78 and city streets
Where your drive meets a Walker County road, the ditch belongs to the county. Ask the county road department what pipe it wants at the entrance before any is bought, because the wrong size at a public road may have to be dug back out.
US 78 and SR 269 through Jasper are state routes, and a driveway turnout onto one is permitted by ALDOT, pipe included. Inside the city limits, start with the City of Jasper. The culvert permit guide has more on who to call.
Lines in the ditch, and an old house in the way
Buried water, gas and fiber lines tend to follow road ditches, which is exactly where an entrance culvert goes. An Alabama 811 request is made two full working days ahead of the dig, the day of the request not counted, and the excavator waits for the marks.
On an older lot the old service lines need finding too. If a house is coming down before a new drive goes in, house demolition in Jasper can go first and the culvert can be set on the same trip.
What it costs and how it is priced
No prices are published, because no two crossings are the same. Pipe size and length, material, how deep the ditch runs, rock in the trench, and how much fill and gravel goes over the top all move the number.
Down South gives a free estimate on the property. Small jobs carry a minimum, and the Jasper figure is in hand before you commit. The culvert installation page covers how pipes are bedded and covered, and gravel driveways in Jasper covers the road on top.

Questions people ask
Not seeing yours? Call (205) 535-6376 and ask Down South, or read the guides.
Who decides the culvert size at a Walker County road?
The road owner. At a county road, ask the Walker County road department; on US 78 or SR 269, ALDOT; inside Jasper, the city. Get that answer before buying pipe, because the size at a public road is often not your choice.
What if the trench hits rock?
Soils around Jasper often have weathered sandstone a couple of feet down. Soft rock usually comes out with the excavator. If a hard ledge sits where the pipe has to go, the pipe may move or the drive may be built up over it to get enough cover.
My culvert keeps filling with dirt. Why?
Usually the ditch above is carrying sand and gravel washed off the drive or the hill, or the pipe is set too flat to flush itself. The answer is often the ditch and the drive, not only a new pipe, and that gets looked at during the estimate.
Can a culvert go in where there was never a ditch?
Yes. Many hillside drives never had one, and the water simply crossed on top. A ditch is cut along the drive to gather the water, the pipe goes in at the low point, and the crossing is built up over it.
How much does a culvert cost in Jasper?
It depends on the pipe, the depth, any rock, the fill and gravel, and whether an old pipe comes out first. Nothing is priced in advance. Estimates around Jasper are free, small jobs carry a minimum, and the trench is not opened until you have agreed to the figure.
