Forestry Mulching in Hamilton, AL

Marion County is timber country with cattle ground between. Mulching clears the saplings, briars and cutover that a bush hog cannot touch, and we say so plainly when the timber is too big for it.

Forestry Mulching in Hamilton

Mulching in the Buttahatchee valley

Buttahatchee River water runs right through Hamilton, east of downtown, on its way southwest to the Tombigbee. The town sits in that valley, with I-22 bending around its south and west sides and US-43 and US-278 meeting in the middle. Marion County is timber country with cattle, corn and soybean ground between, and a tract here can go from open pasture to a wall of pine saplings and briars inside a few seasons.

A forestry mulcher is the tool for that stage of growth. Ours are tracked loaders with mulching heads that grind briars, privet, greenbrier, sweetgum, pine saplings and standing hardwood up to roughly six to eight inches on the stump. The material is left as chips where it stood. There is no windrow, no burn pile and no truck, and the dirt is not turned over.

Hamilton is inside our service area. We are based in Berry, in Fayette County, the county south of Marion. Call or text (205) 535-6376 with the location, the acreage and what is on it, and we can look at it with you on satellite first. Estimates are free. The forestry mulching page explains the method, and land clearing in Hamilton covers the heavier jobs.

What we look at on Hamilton land

River bottom along the Buttahatchee

Hamilton sits in the valley of the Buttahatchee, and the bottom land along the river and the creeks feeding it grows the thickest brush in the county. It is also the softest ground. Our machines run on tracks with low ground pressure, so they can work bottoms that would bog a wheeled tractor, but only when the ground is dry enough to carry them. River bottom mulching around Hamilton is weather work. We would sooner wait a week than leave ruts you have to look at for years.

Timber that is past mulching size

Marion County's forests drew the timber industry here, and a lot of land is still in trees that have had decades to grow. Much of that is over the six to eight inches a mulching head takes. That is a clearing job for the dozer and excavator, and we will tell you which one you have after a look. If there is sale value standing on it, deal with that first. Our guide on selling timber before you clear explains how the order works.

Pasture, cattle and the edges

After cotton faded, Marion County farmers turned to cattle, corn and soybeans, and there is a lot of pasture around Hamilton. Pasture goes back from the edges in. Sweetgum and briars come out from the tree line, the fence row thickens, and a few years on a third of the field is gone. Mulching takes it back to the fence without scraping off the topsoil the grass needs. If the whole field has gone, that is pasture reclamation, and it is the same machine doing a bigger job.

Should I sell the timber before mulching my land near Hamilton, AL?

If there is timber of sale size on it, look into that first. A mulcher turns small trees into chips, and nobody wants to do that to wood that had value. After a harvest, the tops, slash and sprouts are what the mulcher is for. Tell us what is standing and we can tell you whether it is mulching size or bigger.

Can a forestry mulcher clear pine saplings and cutover in Marion County?

Yes. Young pine, sweetgum sprouts, briars and logging slash are what a mulching head handles well. It grinds them in place and leaves a chip floor you can walk or replant through. Stumps from the harvest stay in the ground unless you want them out, which is dozer and excavator work.

Do you take forestry mulching jobs as far as Hamilton, AL?

Yes. Marion County is one of the eight west Alabama counties we cover, and Hamilton is inside that area. If you do not live near the land, we can go over it with you on satellite and get close on price, then look at it on the ground before work starts. Small jobs carry a minimum, and you hear the figure first.

Can you mulch river bottom land on the Buttahatchee?

In dry weather, when the ground will carry a tracked machine. Bottoms grow heavy privet and briars, and a mulcher clears them well. Before any clearing on low ground beside a river, check whether it counts as wetland. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers regulates work in wetlands and streams, and that question is theirs to answer.
