Gravel Driveways in Winfield, AL
Winfield is a small city on US 43 with farm and timber ground on every side, so its driveways run from short gravel drives in town to long lanes through the pines. Down South cuts new ones in and puts old ones back in shape, with the crown and ditches that keep the rock where it was laid.

Gravel Driveways in Winfield
In town and out the county roads
About 4,800 people live in Winfield, the second largest city in Marion County, and its southern end crosses into Fayette County. Inside town, gravel drives tend to be short, often running back to a carport or a shop behind the house.
A few miles out it changes. Homes sit back off the road on acreage, and the drive is a lane through pasture or pines. Those are the drives that rut, wash and grow up at the edges, because nobody has graded them in years.
Foothill dips and rises
Winfield lies in the foothills of the Appalachians, and the ground rolls. A long lane usually has two or three dips and rises, and every dip is a spot where water collects and the rock goes soft.
Each low spot gets a way out: a ditch turnout, a culvert under the drive, or the grade raised so water crosses without pooling. Pipes are covered on the Winfield culvert page, and the washing-out guide explains why rock alone does not fix a dip.
Building a new lane
A new drive starts with the route. Down South clears it if it is in timber, strips the soft topsoil, and cuts the roadbed with the Cat dozer so it has a crown in the middle and ditches on the sides.
Base rock goes down first and is packed, then the surface gravel. The base carries the weight and the surface gives traction. Leaving out the base is why so many drives are mud by their second winter. The full driveways service page goes through the build in detail.
Old drives that need regrading
Plenty of the work here is repair. The drive has a hump of grass down the middle, ruts on both sides and the gravel spread into the yard. The rock is often still there; it is just in the wrong place.
The track loader pulls the edges back in, the surface is reshaped with a crown, and the ditches are cleaned so water leaves. New rock goes where the old base has failed, not down the whole length, which keeps the cost down. The gravel driveway repair page covers it.
Permits and lines at US 43
US 43 runs through the middle of Winfield and is a state route, so a new entrance onto it needs an ALDOT access permit. County roads go through the county engineer of whichever county the road is in, Marion or Fayette.
Inside the city, check with the City of Winfield before a new entrance goes in at the street. Alabama 811 is called before any digging, at least two full working days ahead.
How a Winfield drive gets priced
The price depends on length and width, how much clearing the route needs, how deep the base goes, how many culverts, and how far the rock is hauled. That is why no number is posted.
Down South walks the drive with you and gives a free estimate. Small jobs carry a minimum, and you get the Winfield figure before you commit. If an old house is coming off the lot first, house demolition in Winfield can be done ahead of the drive.

Questions people ask
Not seeing yours? Call (205) 535-6376 and ask Down South, or read the guides.
Can my drive be fixed without hauling in new gravel?
Sometimes. If the rock has just been pushed to the edges and into the grass, it can be pulled back in and recrowned. Where the base has failed and mud is coming through, new rock is needed in those spots.
Who issues the permit for a new entrance on US 43 in Winfield?
ALDOT, because US 43 is a state route, and it issues access permits for driveway turnouts onto state highways. For a county road, ask the county engineer for Marion or Fayette County, whichever one the road is in.
How wide should a gravel lane be?
Wide enough for the biggest thing that will use it, plus room for the crown and the ditches. A lane that takes a log truck, a cattle trailer or a concrete truck needs more width than one that only sees a car. That is settled when the route is walked.
Why does my driveway grow grass down the middle?
Because nothing drives there. The wheel tracks pack down and sink, the center stays loose and grass takes it. Regrading cuts that hump down, shapes a proper crown that sheds water, and puts the rock back under the tires.
What does a gravel driveway cost in Winfield?
It depends on length, width, clearing, base depth, culverts and haul distance. Down South does not post prices. Estimates are free, small jobs carry a minimum, and the dozer does not unload until you have agreed to the figure.
