Forestry Mulching in Northport, AL

From the brush behind a subdivision yard to hunting land north of town, mulching clears Northport ground in one pass and leaves chips on the dirt in place of a burn pile.

Forestry Mulching in Northport

Mulching in town and in the country past it

Highway 69 runs north out of Northport toward Jasper. US-43 heads north toward Fayette County, and US-82 heads west toward Coker and Gordo. Take any of the three and the subdivisions give way to the timber, pasture and hunting land of northern Tuscaloosa County. Most mulching work around Northport sits out there, with a steady share in town too: the wooded back of a lot, a drainage edge gone to privet, a lot waiting on a house.

The machine is the same either way. A tracked loader with a mulching head grinds standing brush, vines and small trees into chips and leaves them on the ground. It takes briars, privet, kudzu, greenbrier, pine saplings and hardwood up to roughly six to eight inches on the stump. Nothing is piled and nothing is burned, which matters when there is a neighbour's fence on one side and a road on the other.

Northport is on our side of the river. Coming down from Fayette County, where we are based, we reach it before we reach Tuscaloosa, and it is inside our service area. Call or text (205) 535-6376 and tell us where the land is and what is on it. Estimates are free. New to the method? Northport ground, from the river north

High ground north, low ground by the river

Northport sits on the north bank of the Black Warrior, right where the Cumberland Plateau gives way to the coastal plain. The land rises north of town and lies low toward the river. Low ground stays soft after rain, and high ground sheds water fast. Mulching suits both for the same reason: the roots stay in and the chips cover the dirt. Tracks spread the machine's weight so soft ground is not rutted, though ground that will not carry a machine has to wait for a dry spell.

Subdivision lots and the acreage beyond

Northport is two places. In town it is subdivision lots and commercial lots with a building either side. A little way up the road it opens into Tuscaloosa County timber and hunting land. In town, mulching clears the brush behind a yard without a burn pile or a line of trucks. Out in the county, the same machine opens shooting lanes, food plot clearings and paths wide enough for a side-by-side. See trail and ATV path clearing for that work, and land clearing in Northport when stumps have to come out.

Toward Lake Tuscaloosa

North of town the land drains to the North River and to Lake Tuscaloosa, which supplies the City of Tuscaloosa's drinking water. The city requires a Land Development Permit for disturbing soil on properties directly adjacent to the lake, and it says to contact its Lakes Division about a tree removal permit on the lake. If your land is near the water, call the city before anything is cut, and we will keep to whatever it sets. Our Lake Tuscaloosa lot clearing page has the detail.

What is forestry mulching and is it right for my Northport property?

It is one machine grinding standing brush and small trees into chips where they stand. It fits when you want ground you can walk, see across or mow, and want the soil left covered: back lots, trails, fence lines, hunting land. It does not take root balls out, so a house site or a plowed field is a clearing job. We do both, and we tell you which one your ground calls for.

Can you clear brush behind a house in a Northport subdivision?

Yes. That is ordinary work in and around town. The machine runs on tracks and is easy on finished ground, and the brush is mulched where it stands, so nothing is burned or hauled past the neighbours. Mark the trees you want kept, and tell us how wide the gate or side yard is so we know the machine can get through.

Do you cut trails and shooting lanes on hunting land north of Northport?

Yes. Lanes, trails and food plot openings are a big part of what a mulcher is for, and the hunting land north and west of town is inside our service area. Tell us where the stands are, or ride it with us. A short ride round the place together saves cutting a lane in the wrong spot.

When is the best time of year for forestry mulching in Northport, AL?

Any time the ground will carry the machine. Low ground near the river is soft through the wet months, so dry spells are when that work gets done. Winter has one advantage: with the leaves down, the operator and the owner can both see the lay of the land and the trees worth keeping. Hunting land is usually cut well ahead of the season.
