Gravel Driveways and Farm Lanes in Cullman, AL

Cullman sits high on a plateau, right by the divide between the Tennessee and Black Warrior rivers, and the county around it is farm roads, poultry lanes and lake lots. Down South builds gravel drives there from the dirt up, and fixes the ones that have rutted or washed.

Gravel Driveways in Cullman

On top of the plateau

The city is about 814 feet up on Brindley Mountain, close to the line where water starts heading either north to the Tennessee or south to the Black Warrior. Much of the county is rolling plateau rather than steep hill.

Rolling ground is kinder to a drive than a mountainside, but it fools people. A drive that looks flat still has a high end and a low end, and with no crown and no ditch, the water uses the drive to get from one to the other.

Lanes that carry farm traffic

Cullman County leads Alabama in agricultural production, and poultry and cattle are a big part of that. A lane to a chicken house or a hay barn takes feed trucks, trailers and tractors in every kind of weather.

That kind of drive needs a real rock base, not a skim of surface gravel, and a crown so it sheds water between loads. Down South cuts it in with the dozer, lays the base, shapes the crown and cuts the ditches. If an old building sits where the lane needs to go, barn demolition in Cullman clears the way.

Smith Lake lot access

Lewis Smith Lake runs along the county's southwest edge, made when Alabama Power dammed the Sipsey Fork in 1961. Lots there tend to fall toward the water, and the drive is usually the first thing built.

Those drives are laid out to climb gradually, with a ditch on the uphill side and turnouts so water leaves the road before it picks up speed. The guide to building a gravel driveway explains the base and drainage in more depth.

Fixing a drive that has rutted out

Most calls are not for a new drive but for an old one: ruts in the wheel tracks, a washboard stretch, a low spot that holds water, gravel pushed into the ditch. Another load of rock on top rarely holds for long.

The drive is cut back to a firm surface and reshaped with a crown, and the ditches are opened back up. Then base and surface rock go down where they are needed. The gravel driveway repair page covers that work in general.

Where the drive meets the road

A new entrance onto a county road ties into the county's ditch and right-of-way, so check with the Cullman County Road Department about the pipe and the connection. US 278, US 31, SR 69 and SR 157 are state routes, and a turnout onto one takes an ALDOT access permit.

Inside the city limits, ask the City of Cullman. Alabama 811 gets the request at least two full working days before any digging, and the marks come before the dozer does.

What the figure depends on

Length, width, how much clearing the route needs, how much base the ground calls for, culverts, and the haul for rock. Those differ on every property, so no price is published.

Down South walks the route and gives a free estimate. Small jobs carry a minimum, and the figure for a Cullman drive comes before you commit. The gravel driveway cost guide goes through what moves the number, and the full driveways service page covers the rest.

Questions about this work

Questions people ask

Not seeing yours? Call (205) 535-6376 and ask Down South, or read the guides.

How much rock does a Cullman farm lane need?

Enough for the heaviest thing that uses it, which on a poultry or cattle farm is a loaded truck. That means a real base course under the surface gravel, with the depth set by how soft the ground is. It is decided after a look at the route.

Do I need a permit for a new driveway entrance in Cullman County?

At a county road, check with the Cullman County Road Department about the connection and any pipe. On a state route such as US 278 or SR 157, ALDOT issues the access permit. Inside the city, ask the City of Cullman.

Why does my drive hold water in the middle?

Usually it has lost its crown, or the wheel tracks have worn below the edges so water has nowhere to go but along them. The fix is to reshape the surface so it sheds to both sides and to reopen the ditches.

Can you build a drive down to a Smith Lake lot?

Yes. Lake-lot drives are laid out to climb gradually, ditched on the uphill side and given turnouts. Alabama Power issues shoreline permits on Smith Lake, so ask them before any clearing or grading near the water.

What does a gravel driveway cost in Cullman?

It turns on length, width, clearing, base depth, culverts and the rock haul. Prices are not published. Down South's estimate is free, small jobs carry a minimum, and no rock is ordered until you have the figure and agree to it.
