Drives north of the river
Past the Northport city limits, a lot of new home sites start with no way in. The lot is on a county road up US-43 toward Samantha or out US-82 toward Coker, the house spot is back in the trees, and a concrete truck has to reach it before anything else happens. In town the job is more often an old drive that ruts, holds water or washes across the yard.
We build and repair gravel driveways and access roads in and around Northport, which is on our side of the Black Warrior. The route is cleared and cut to grade with the Cat dozer. The road gets a crown so water sheds to the sides, ditches to carry it away, culverts where it has to cross, and a base course under the surface gravel, usually a crusher run base with a surface layer over it.
A gravel drive fails when water gets on it and has nowhere to go, so we look at the water first and the route second. Estimates are free and priced off the property. Already have a drive that ruts or washes? See gravel driveway repair. For clearing and other work nearby, see land clearing in Northport.

Hill drives toward the lake
North of Northport the ground rises toward Lake Tuscaloosa, wooded and steep. On a grade, water picks up speed in the wheel tracks and takes the fines with it, so the crown and the ditches matter more than the rock on top. We lay the route across the slope where we can, keep the grade something a loaded truck can pull, and give the ditch a turnout or a culvert wherever it needs to empty. Lots directly next to the lake come under City of Tuscaloosa rules on disturbing soil, so check first.
Low lots near the Black Warrior
Old Northport sits low by the river, with a levee along the bank. A drive there does not wash so much as sink, because soft subgrade swallows gravel. The fix is to get the roadbed up, cut ditches so the base can drain and build the base thick enough to carry a truck. The Coker Formation, named for the town just west of Northport, is mostly sand and clay with some gravel, so the ground under one drive can change from firm to soft in a short run.
Where the drive meets the road
US-43, US-82 and Highway 69 are state routes, and a drive onto one needs an ALDOT permit from the district office, with a side drain pipe no smaller than 15 inches under the drive. County roads belong to Tuscaloosa County Public Works, so ask them about pipe size and placement. Inside the city, ask Northport Planning and Inspections about work at the street. Our driveway culvert and permit guide explains the steps.

Do I need a permit for a new driveway in Northport, AL?
It depends on the road it connects to. A state or US highway such as US-43 or US-82 needs an ALDOT permit. A county road goes through Tuscaloosa County Public Works. Inside the city, ask the Northport Planning and Inspections Department. Call the office that has your road before any pipe goes in the ditch.
How much does a gravel driveway cost in Northport, Alabama?
Length is only the start. Width, slope, how much clearing and cutting the route needs, how many culverts, how soft the ground is and how much rock it takes all move the price. Our gravel driveway cost guide walks through each. We price the drive after seeing the route, and estimates are free.
Can you fix a gravel driveway that holds water in Northport?
Usually, yes. A drive that holds water has no crown, no ditch or no outlet. We regrade it so it sheds water, cut a ditch or set a pipe where the water needs to go, and put rock back on a base that can carry weight. See gravel driveway repair.
What kind of gravel do you use for driveways around Northport?
Usually a crusher run base with a surface layer over it. Crusher run has fines in it, so it packs tight and carries weight, and the top layer gives you the wearing surface. On soft or wet ground the base is built thicker. What goes on your drive depends on the ground and what drives on it.
