Excavating in Northport, in town and out past it
Two kinds of dirt meet under Northport. The city grew up on the north bank of the Black Warrior River at the fall line, where the hard rock of the Appalachian side gives way to the sand, clay and gravel of the coastal plain. Downtown sits low by the river. North of town the land rises toward Lake Tuscaloosa. A footing near the river and a footing on a hill lot north of town are two different jobs.
Northport is inside our service area. In town the work is footings, trenches and drainage on lots with a house on either side. Up US-43, out Highway 69 or west toward Coker, it opens into Tuscaloosa County acreage, where the calls are culverts, long trenches, stumps and level spots for shops. We take commercial lots and site prep too. See our excavating services for the full list.
Every job is priced off the property after a look, and there is no charge for the estimate. On a tight lot, tell us about the gate, the overhead lines and where a trailer can park, because access decides how a town job starts. Small jobs carry a minimum that you hear before you commit. Clearing first? See land clearing in Northport.

What a dig in Northport runs into
Sand, clay and gravel under the hills
The Coker Formation, a layer geologists map across this part of west Alabama, takes its name from Coker, a town in Tuscaloosa County west of Northport. Geologists describe it as mostly sand and clay with some gravel. In a trench that can mean firm red clay for most of the run and then a pocket of loose sand or gravel that will not hold a wall. We dig to the depth and width your plans call for, keep the bottom level, and say what we found. If the dirt changes the job, you hear it before we go on.
Low ground, creeks and standing water
Northport has low ground along the Black Warrior, where a levee runs beside the river, and higher ground with creeks above it. Heavy rain has to cross a lot of yards on the way down. Most drainage problems in town are a yard that holds water, a drive that washes or a shop that takes water across the slab. The fix is fall: a swale, a ditch, a pipe or a regrade. Our land grading page covers how that is shaped.
City jurisdiction and the highways
The Northport Planning and Inspections Department handles the city's planning, zoning and building rules. A city's reach can extend a little past its limits, so an address just outside Northport may still answer to City Hall. Ask before footings are dug. US-43, US-82 and Highway 69 are state routes, and a new drive or culvert on one needs an ALDOT permit. County roads go through Tuscaloosa County Public Works. Have Alabama 811 mark the lot before a town dig, and remember that sprinkler lines and other private lines stay unmarked.

Do you do excavating on small town lots in Northport, AL?
Yes. In and around the city the work is footings, trenches and drainage on lots with houses either side. Tell us how wide the gate is, what is overhead and where a trailer can unload. The machines run on tracks, which spreads the weight and is easier on a finished yard than tires.
Does Northport require a permit before I dig footings for a shop?
Northport's Planning and Inspections Department handles building permits for the city. Call them with your address and what you plan to build before any footing is dug. Once you have what the city requires, we dig to the size and depth on the plans.
Can you fix standing water in a yard in Northport, Alabama?
Most of the time, yes. Standing water means the yard has no fall or the water has no outlet. We look at where it comes from and where it can go, then cut a swale or ditch, set a pipe or regrade so it runs away from the house. See yard drainage and grading.
Do you take excavating jobs north of Northport toward Samantha and Lake Tuscaloosa?
Yes, that ground is inside our service area. Lots right next to Lake Tuscaloosa come with City of Tuscaloosa rules on disturbing soil, so check with the city before any digging. Away from the lake it is mostly acreage work: culverts, trenches, stumps and level spots for shops and barns.
